Money, Money, MONEY!
You both went to college, maybe even to graduate school. You both have the same amount of work experience and you both landed the same job, but at the end of the day something doesn’t add up because you only make 78% of what your co-worker makes.
What’s the deal? Oh right, you’re a woman.
It’s seems ludicrous that today women are still not guaranteed equal pay for equal work, but low and behold the wage gap persists. If you're African America or Latin you fair even worse! African American women earn only 69 cents for every $1.00 earned by a man and Latina earn just 59 cents!
Well this Latina is not happy about it, especially considering the Equal Pay Act was passed over in 1963 and since then the wage gap has only narrowed by 19 cents– that’s a rate of less than half a penny a year! Half a penny a year! Seriously?
Over the course of a lifetime this is a significant chunk of change. In fact, the Wage Project found that full-time working women with a high school diploma will lose as much as $700,000 over a lifetime of work. College graduate will lose $1.2 million and professional school graduates may lose up to $2 million – money they would have earned had they been born a different sex.
Today, on Equal Pay Day let us not forget that when it comes to your paycheck women continue to fall short.
