Great GGR editorial!

I came across this great editorial in the LA Times this morning about the reversal of the Global Gag Rule.

Congress should make it law that this country will fund abortion services as part of its international health aid....
....We're glad to see the pendulum swing back again, and we expect this to be just a first step toward correcting years of ineffective, moralistic policies that sought to roll back reproductive rights at the expense of women's health. Access to safe and legal abortion is one of those rights; better yet, when women have ready and affordable access to contraception, abortion rates drop. The best scenario would be congressional action that positions this country for the long term to favor global health over ideological convictions.
I couldn’t agree more - health should always come before ideology! It’s a good thing we finally have a President that thinks so too.

Check it out!

Exciting News!

I was recently hired as a blogger for Care2 , a social network website with approximately 9 million members that helps connect activists from around the world and offers a platform for online activism for a variety of issues (women's rights, human rights, civil rights, animal rights, environment rights, etc).

I will be blogging for the women's rights channel, of course, and would love you support. I'll be posting 2-3 days a week so please stop by and check out what I have to say whenever you have a chance. Feel free to post comments to my articles or those of others that interest you.

My first post was published last week: Check out what I have to say about the anniversary of Roe v. Wade!

Thanks in advance for your support! I was very excited to share this news with you and hope that my writing will inform and entertain you (as I hope it has here!). Care2 is a great place to meet new people and take part in the type of activism you seek out so, at the very least, go and check them out and join the community and show that you care too!

Happy Birthday Roe and GGR Reversed!

What a week for reproductive rights! Just one day after blowing out the candles on Roe v. Wade’s birthday cake we now have yet another reason to celebrate – the reversal of the Global Gag Rule!

AT LAST - we finally, finally have an ally in the White House and it feels great! In just one of his first days in office Barack Obama has begun the long journey of undoing the damage of the last 8 years and women around the world have reason to celebrate!

Cecile Richard’s post on Huffington Post offers a great perspective on the impact of this important step and the more importantly, what more needs to be done and why:

“In the long term, women's health must be a priority not just in theory but in practice, and across the board. Expanding access to family planning is not only good, basic health care; it saves women's lives.”
Amen!

Let us hope that Obama will not stop here but continue to put to practice his support of women’s rights.

Back in Action

Hello again friends!

After a grueling few weeks of work I'm back and what a better time for it! This week has been chock full of exciting news starting with, of course, the inauguration of our 44th President – Barack Obama (Yes We Can!). I could not be prouder to be an American and more hopeful for the future of our country. Watching the coverage on Tuesday I was awe struck by the amount of people that flocked to D.C. to be a part of this historic day. I only wish I too could have been there, but even watching the coverage from home I was overwhelmed with emotion and pride. Did anyone make it out to D.C? If so, please share your experience – I’d love to hear from you!

More good news came with the swearing in of Hilary Clinton as Secretary of State – another victory for this nation! The Senate approved her overwhelmingly with a vote of 94-2 just a day following Obama’s inauguration. Although I will miss her terribly as a New York senator I could not think of a person better equipped for this position!

And this is just the first week of a new democratically led era in American history. I can’t wait to see what the future holds. What do you want Obama to do in his first 100 days in office?

A New Year

Happy 2009 everybody!!

I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays and are having a fabulous start to the new year. I can say for myself that 2009 has started off with a busy bang and unfortunately I've neglected blogging (sorry!)! But rest assured that I will pick up speed again soon but in the meantime I've decided to take some time to rethink the structure and style of this blog. My intention was to spark conversation about important feminist issues and share my story as a woman living in New York City, and I'd like to think of new, fun ways to do this so stay tuned!
